Don't Violate the eBay Business Listing Laws

Comments (0)

There are laws everywhere, even online, and especially at eBay. If you're selling or buying on eBay, think of eBay as that friendly yet strict parent. eBay will give you wonderful features and tools to help you be successful, but once you start breaking rules and causing trouble, eBay is going to kick you out its house.

The last thing you want to do is to be barred from a house that allows you to make a ton of money. That's why you need to make sure that you're not violating any of eBay's listing policies. Although you can access all of eBay's policies and restrictions online, listed below are two of the most frequently, seen listing violations.

1) Identical Auctions. You have one 100 identical, pink, fluffy pillows for sale. eBay allows you to list multiple items so why not list all one hundred pillows? Well, not only is a bad idea financially, but it's also a big no-no at eBay. If you place a hundred identical items on eBay, and other sellers have the same item listed as well, none of you are going to make any money at all because of the law of supply and demand. Your limit for identical items is 15 listings at any time. Remember this so your eBay guardians don't have to give you that first lecture.

2) Listing Items You Don't Have Actually Have (Pre-Sale Listings). How on Earth can you sell what you don't have? Sure you might be waiting for the items to arrive, but what if the ship never makes it in to the port. You have your buyer's money, and they have nothing. Of course, many buyers like to presale because generally the first sellers to list hot, new products will get the highest bids. Nevertheless, unless you can absolutely guarantee the item will arrive within a specific time period (one that does not exceed thirty days but preferably much, much sooner), then you should not do a pre-sale. If you do a pre-sale, this must clearly be stated in your auction.

Again, these are just two of the listing violations associated with eBay auctions. For more information about other violations, the eBay website offers a complete account of all its listing policies. Remember that your goal is to be a successful seller so you need to stay informed. Knowing is power because knowing what you can and cannot do will let you have a long and fruitful relationship with eBay.
